Blue Cypress Golf Course

Blue Cypress Nine Hole Gets a Facelift

By Dave Daubert

Jacksonville, Fl.--Blue Cypress Golf Course, the city of Jacksonville-owned facility located in the heart of Blue Cypress Park, just across the St. Johns River east of downtown, proudly announces a major renovation to the course set to reopen mid-April.

The facelift includes rebuilt greens, tee boxes and fairways for the layout, plus an enhanced and lengthened driving range with a new 3,500 square foot practice green.

Originally opened in the 1960s as the Blue Cypress Golf & Country Club, the city purchased the site in 1994 with plans to convert it to a more natural, resource-based public recreation park. The golf course was converted into a nine-hole layout in 2003 with a fishing pier, community center, swimming pool, tennis courts and several athletic fields added to the park.

The course fell on difficult times and ultimately closed in 2016. Indigo Golf Partners partnered with the City of Jacksonville in 2020 to totally renovate and reopen the course using funds allocated by the city. Construction began last June and the course is anticipated to open in April. Once completed, the entire course other than the greens will be maintained at one low length which should provide a more enjoyable playing environment for golfers of all skill levels.

"Indigo Golf Partners and the City of Jacksonville have a joint commitment to elevate the facility and create a comfortable and fun environment for everyone to enjoy playing golf," says Daryl Joseph. Director of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services. "Indigo has a strong track record in the state of Florida and has already shown their expertise in managing safe and enjoyable recreational experiences."

Designed by Everett, Byron and Terry Comstock, Blue Cypress Golf Course is a player-friendly 9-hole, par 36 parkland-style layout stretching out to 3,229 yards from the longest tees. After the opening, the city will engage an architect to help create an additional three holes to make two six-hole loops.

"Jacksonville loves its golf and we are so proud to help revive the course at Blue Cypress Park in a sustainable way," says Dan Zimmer, Vice-President of Operations at Indigo Golf Partners. "By providing consistent great conditions, a high level of service and exciting programs for all golfers, we will help the course excel even more as a community asset and business."
