Port Charlotte Golf Club
The Best Port Charlotte Has To Offer!
By David Theoret
The 18-hole Port Charlotte Golf Club in Port Charlotte, FL is a member owned, semi-private golf course that opened in 1959. Originally designed by David Wallace, The Port Charlotte Golf Club was purchased in 2004 by the members of the Punta Gorda Country Club which is no longer being used as a golf course.
A complete renovation of the Port Charlotte Golf Course was completed in 2005. The greens were reconstructed and a lot of undulation was added as was TifEagle Bermuda grass greens. Many of the trees that were lost in August of 2004 due to Hurricane Charley have since been replanted. New bunkers were added and fairways were reshaped, making the course more challenging but still remaining player-friendly. The renovation also included a complete rebuild of the clubhouse.
Each year Port Charlotte Golf Club is put to the test by many local golfers as well as the annual influx of visitors from the North. The greens are considered some of the best in the area; good enough for the course to be voted best course in Charlotte County by the readers of the Charlotte Sun-Herald Newspapers. These readers also voted Port Charlotte Golf Club best driving range and best golf shop. It is the second consecutive year Port Charlotte Golf Club has been voted the Best Golf Course in Charlotte County.
Port Charlotte Golf Club measures 6690 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 118 and a 72.8 USGA rating. The course features 5 sets of tees for different skill levels. The practice area offers 9 target greens and a short game and practice bunker area. The redesigned clubhouse offers breakfast and lunch. The restaurant also features a full liquor bar.
The Pro Shop carries a wide variety of clothing and equipment and they try to stay competitive with prices; monthly sales help to keep the stock moving. Port Charlotte Golf Club has a friendly and knowledgeable staff that can help both new, average and the experienced golfers.
Memorable Holes
Number 1: Par 5, 500 yards. A fair par 5 gets the round underway. It's a dogleg left with a fairway bunker on the right which shouldn't really come into play. Anything hit right off the tee and you will have to battle the trees on your layup shot. Accuracy is required on your approach shot as the green is flanked on both sides by sand. Par is a good start.
Number 2: Par 4, 446 yards. Number two is a good test of golf from any set of tees. A long par 4 that requires another accurate tee shot. The green is slightly elevated and once again surrounded by bunkers.
Number 7: Par 3, 200 yards. Another long shot to a green surrounded by bunkers; 5 pot bunkers on the right side to be exact. Choose the right club off the tee and give yourself a shot at par or better.
Number 11: Par 5, 515 yards. A slight draw would be the preferred tee shot on this reachable par 5; just be sure to avoid the fairway bunker on the left side. If you are going to get home in two, you will need to carry your approach shot onto the green which is protected by a sand trap in the middle of the fairway.
Number 12: Par 5, 579 yards. Back to back par 5s make Port Charlotte Golf Club that much more memorable. Once again you will need to have accuracy off the tee on this tree lined par 5. Fairway bunkers on the left side of the dogleg left can come into play on your layup shot. Number 12 is another good test of golf.
Number 18: Par 4, 361 yards. Good control off the tee can help shorten this dogleg right par 4 finishing hole. Make it to the dogleg and you will be left with a mid-iron approach shot to a fairly flat green that can easily yield par or better.
Last Word
Port Charlotte Golf Club is a very player-friendly golf course. The fairways are wide enough to make it enjoyable for players of all levels and abilities; just pick the right set of tees. The back to back par 5s on the back nine are a nice touch and something you don't see every day. The second hole at 446 yards from the back tees is a good test of golf. As long as you have control of your driver, you can score well.
The staff at Port Charlotte Golf Club is very friendly and knowledgeable; they are there to make sure your experience is pleasant and enjoyable. For more information on Port Charlotte Golf Club you can give them a call at (941) 625-4109 or visit them online at www.portcharlottegolfclub.com.

David Theoret has been in the golf and golf travel industry for over 10 years, primarily selling online advertising. For the past seven years, he has also been a golf writer, reviewing golf courses, resorts, destinations, equipment, golf apparel, and training aids - the latter of which never seems to help. David's articles and reviews have been posted on many golf travel and equipment websites.
Growing up in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, it was naturally assumed he would play hockey. Beginning at the age of 3 and continuing into his late 30's, he did just that. However, after one too many pucks to the head, he realized that golf was a lot easier on the body (whoever said hockey players were slow) and took the game up.
After moving to Florida and accepting a position with TravelGolf Media (now part of GolfNow) his love for the game grew exponentially. Most Saturdays you will find him on a course somewhere in Florida or on the practice range reinforcing his bad habits. David plays to a 10 handicap - unless there is money involved in which case it goes considerably higher. He currently resides in Lakeland, FL with his wife Belinda and their two "kids", Madyson and Molly.
