Southern Dunes Greens Renovation Updates

Assistant Superintendent Jim Harris and Turfgrass Management intern Coleman Torgerson Apply the first application of Round up to the greens. This is the first step in the no-till renovation process.

Equipment operators Ross Saylor and Ken Montgomery immediately follow with a triplex greens roller and smear the Round up solution onto the leaves. They would load and unload via trailer to ensure the Round up would not be tracked throughout the course during transport.

Two days after the Round-up application, we started the De-thatching process. This includes running four different Verticutters across the greens each at a different direction. This process took about three days to accomplish due to the fact that we wanted to make sure we removed all healthy plants to assure a clean biomass for planting.

We installed a supplemental irrigation system with a second set of part-circle sprinklers to apply additional water to the surrounding areas. This will allow us to water more efficiently. Before, only one full-circle head on each corner of the green would water not only the greens but the surrounds as well. This will give us the advantage to water surrounds without having to water the greens and vice versa. This process took a lot of time and effort by all. The trenching was performed by our General Manager Shane Trice and Head Professional Kevin Woodard. Together they trenched over 4,600 yards to complete this project.
